The Oscar winners have been announced, and more casting news ruled the internet this past week.
The Academy Award Winners were announced last night, with a few choice surprises. The award for best picture went to Birdman, while Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) and Julianne Moore (Still Alice) received awards for best actor and actress, respectively. News about X-Men: Apocalypse seems to be flowing out by the gallon recently. This past week it was Nightcrawler getting the nod, with director Bryan Singer announcing over Twitter that Kodi Smit-McPhee has been cast as the fan favorite. Smit-McPhee has previous roles in films such as Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and ParaNorman, as well as the lesser known Viggo Mortensen-led The Road.
The fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film (Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) has begun shooting and has an official synopsis: “Thrust into an all-new adventure, a down-on-his-luck Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar (Bardem), escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.” Contrary to earlier rumors, the film will not feature a returning Orlando Bloom. Ewan McGregor is set to make his directorial debut. The Scottish actor will direct American Pastoral, a film about a man whose daughter sets off a bomb to protest the war in Vietnam. The film looks at the main character’s personal life amidst political and familial conflict. Read more about it here.
